National Policy & Capacity Building

BPAMP activities at the national level aim to develop models for the effective management of the National Protected Area System of Cambodia. This is achieved through the (1) transfer of the experience gained in the project’s pilot site, Virachey National Park, and through (2) the development, testing and implementation of national level models. Models from both sources will contribute to the development of a national protected area management tool kit.

The National Policy and Capacity Building Component is managed by a Technical Team Leader. Activities of this component are supported by all project staff, the Department of Nature Conservation and Protection, the Ministry of Environment’s GIS Unit (Geographic Information System), one international advisor, and collaborating non-governmental organisations such as Conservation International and WildAid.

Key activities of the National Policy and Capacity Building Component are:

• supporting the development and passage of a national protected area law
• producing a protected area system plan
• producing a tool kit for protected area development and management
• developing a protected area financing strategy
• developing and maintaining a management information system
• coordinating the development of national ranger training curriculum
• developing a national outreach programme
• supporting the Ministry with the development of community protected area guidelines
• facilitating the drafting of a transboundary cooperation agreement
